Tony Harrison – Acupuncture, Chinese Herbs

After graduating in Biological Science in 1971, I worked as an ecologist before completing studies in Acupuncture at the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Leamington Spa.

I was originally attracted by the similarities between seasonal changes innature and the practice of 5 element acupuncture and even now my main interest is in preventative medicine using Chinese medical practive.

In 1997, I graduated in Chinese Herbal Medicine from the London based college of Chinese Herbal Medicine with clinical experience in Nanjing, China.

At this time I drew my interests together to found the Bristol Chinese Herb garden. In 1998 I travelled extensively in China thanks to a Winston Churchill Scholarship. After study of herb gardens in China I moved the garden to its present location in the University of Bristol Botanic Gardens and continue to teach at this venue.

This garden is a partnership between the University of Bristol and the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM). THe RCHM is the leading professional body of Chinese herbalists in the UK with over 400 members.

As current Vice President of the RCHM I am highly committed to raising the standards of dispensary practice and herb supply. With this aim I work with other organisations to ensure sustainability and ethical production of herbs. This work is leading to a Medicinal Herb Conservation Programme with Nanjing Botanic Gardens.
