Lyn Clark – Homeopathy

LYN CLARK is a homeopathic practitioner with over 20 years clinical experience. Here she answers some frequently asked questions.

Who uses homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a healthcare system that has gained enormously in popularity over the last few years. More and more people are turning to homeopathy as a real alternative with which to address their health issues.
Homeopathy may also be used in a complementary way alongside orthodox medicine. In fact, I recommend that a person maintains a relationship with his or her GP when treating medical conditions.

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a profound but gentle system of medicine that can work at the deepest level of our being to promote healing.

Homeopathy recognises that our bodies are always seeking to maintain themselves creatively but that during ill health this ability becomes impaired. Homeopathic remedies strengthen the body’s inner resources, enabling and supporting the body’s own natural inclinations toward health.

Homeopathy also recognises that ill health begins on a deep and often emotional level, long before it manifests on a physical level in the form of clinical symptoms. This recognition results in a therapeutic approach that treats the root causes of illness not just the clinical symptoms often bringing about long term healing.
Symptoms are seen as expressions of disharmony within the whole person and therefore it is the person who needs treatment not just the disease.

Are there any side effects?

No. Homeopathic remedies cannot cause side-effects and you cannot become addicted to them. This is because only a very minute dose of the active ingredient is used in a specially prepared diluted form.

How does it work?

Homeopathic remedies work by stimulating the body’s own healing power. Homeopathy was founded in 1796 by a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, who discovered a way of treating ill health according to the ‘way of similars’. The ‘way of similars’ is to give the patient a minute dose of a substance that causes similar symptoms in a healthy person. This minute dose is in a specially diluted and potentised form. This means that, for example, in a case of insomnia a minute homeopathic dose of coffee may be given which in a healthy person would cause sleeplessness in large doses. Surprisingly, this will often enable a patient to sleep well naturally.

What conditions can be treated with homeopathy?

Most conditions, whether physical, emotional and mental, can be treated with homeopathy. The approach will always be to treat the whole person whatever level the illness is showing up on.

Homeopathy is particularly useful in treating conditions that are chronic and long-standing. Often where many approaches have been tried, homeopathy may be effective. Also, when a person knows they are not quite well but before an illness has fully developed and been clinically diagnosed, homeopathy is often able to treat effectively. This is important in preventative medicine where you want to act quickly and not wait for a full picture of ill health to develop before you can know what the problem is and how to proceed.

Also emotional conditions such as depression, and low energy illnesses such as ME can usually be helped.

What happens when I visit a homeopath?

In order to find a right remedy for you as an individual your homeopath will need to know all about you. A detailed understanding of who you are, along with any complaints and details of symptoms and how you experience them, is needed to assess your case correctly.  Your past medical history, the way you live and your energy levels are also important. The initial consultation usually lasts at least an hour and a half. Your homeopath will give you a remedy, usually in the form of a tablet or tablets. Follow-ups usually occur on a monthly basis only, making homeopathy affordable for most people.

How long does treatment take?

This depends on what sort of illness you have as well as the other individual characteristics of your case. I will discuss all this with you. A slowly developing complaint or one that has been experienced for some years will not disappear immediately although there may be a quick response and some improvement quite soon. Each case is different and no two people are alike.

What happens in a consultation?

Time and great care are taken to choose a homeopathic remedy based on the deepest indications of your case possible.

1½ -2 hours are dedicated to this process in the initial consultation. This involves an in-depth discussion and a gentle line of questioning to explore your individual profile. Many people find this a powerful and fruitful experience. It allows the homeopath to choose the unique medicine indicated for you.
